INDUSTRY ASSET LIFE CYCLE

Throughout my work in organizational design I have found that all core work efforts are associated with an asset life cycle in which the creation, operation and divestification of assets move through a defined set of inter-related phases.

The example provided is specific to the "energy industy".

As depicted, the energy industry asset life cycle consists of five distinct phases:

  • Opportunity

  • Formal Approval

  • Commencement of Production

  • Operations

  • Decommission

The Industry Asset Life Cycle

Each phase has its own distinct set of governance, core and support business processes.

The same basic life cycle structure appears in most industrial settings. What is often "different" is the concept (and type) of assets.

Over the course of my career I have created asset life cycles for energy, mining, banking, government and real estate development type organizations.

At the centre of all phases within an industry asset life cycle is the "informational hub" in which informational systems (manual and automated):

  • Collect & assess required raw data and content

  • Feed raw data & content into decision making and knowledge creation areas

  • Disseminate raw data & content to a variety of end users
